About Improplay

Improplay brings together Katy's dual interests in early years learning and movement research.

We provide opportunities for collaboration. To share dance improvisation and play with children, teachers and artists. Taking place in different formats: research, projects, performances, workshops and CPD sessions. Whether it is in a dance studio, village hall, park or playground, school hall, classroom, or even a corridor! We share energising and calm, reflective movement experiences.

Improplay aims to develop awareness of contemporary dance, in particular the craft of movement improvisation and imagination, the use of play and the effects this practice can have on learning and wellbeing within different environments.

People Dancing
Early Years Dance Network (EYDN) Networking Event

Please see People Dancing Website for more information:

"About this Event: The next People Dancing Early Years Dance Network online event is programmed solely for artist/teachers and practitioners. This physical movement training session gives the opportunity for facilitators of early years dance practice to come together, get moving and learn approaches to working with children and families in dance.

The session is led by Katy Hewison who is the dance artist and creator of Improplay; a series of projects bringing together young children and dance artists in creative, imaginative, reflective spaces exploring dance improvisation and its effects on energy awareness and attention in learning environments.

Katy has recently been working online with EYFS and Key Stage 1 classes with her team of dance artists, including a film maker and musician. For her session with EYDN, Katy and two of her team of dancers will deliver based on an element of the Improplay processes she is currently researching and developing with children aged 4-6 years. It will also include an opportunity to discuss how we use improvisation online in our work with very young children.

Those taking part in physical activity online will do so at their own risk.

Participants are advised to wear loose clothing suitable for movement, and have a clear space and bottle of water to hand."
